OIL AND GAS DRILLING PROCESSES: AN OVERVIEW

The Natural Oil and Gas Industry is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and pivotal industries in the present global scenario, with petroleum and natural gas accounting for fulfillment of more than sixty percent of the global energy demands. Region-wise, the Middle-East accounts for nearly one third of the world’s total oil and gas production, with 21.9 percent of present global reserves being located in Saudi Arabia alone. With increasingly computerized mechanisms and processes, and constant upgrades in technology, this vast industry entails formulation, compilation and communication of voluminous amounts of data. Therefore the demand for efficient Data Management Services and certified, reliable translation services for almost all areas of the Oil and Gas Industry is on a constant rise.
The exhaustive range of Oil and Gas- related processes can be divided into five broad areas namely the Upstream Processes (comprising of exploration, drilling and production of crude oil and natural gas), Downstream Processes (comprising of use of oil tankers and refineries to reach out to retailers and consumers), Pipeline Processes, Marine Services and Supply-related Services. Use of gravity meters, magneto meters as well as 2-D, 3-D and 4-D seismic exploration activities that enable geophysicists to detect the potential reserves, is followed by the actual drilling procedure to extract oil or gas. Once the potential reserve has been detected, the first mandate is to select the exact site, followed by obtaining appropriate sanctions from concerned authorities relating to the legal rights, environmental considerations etc. Thereon, for the purpose of drilling, the land is cleared, leveled, appropriate water sources are identified and the land is dug up at several places using a Drilling Rig.

Apart from the actual drilling hole, a Cellar needs to be dug somewhere near the drilling hole for storage of drilling accessories. The main drilling hole is then set with a Conductor-Pipe of a large diameter (usually made of concrete) that prevents the hole from collapsing, and the rig equipment is set in the holes around the main hole. Drilling Rigs for drilling over potential offshore reserves could be of different types based on the requirement. Some run on diesel while others are electrically driven. A suitable pump is then used for pumping out drilling mud (waste extract of water, clay, rock cuttings etc) using a drill mud circulation system. Research is being undertaken currently on horizontal drilling techniques for ecologically sensitive areas and laser drilling. When the drillers finally reach the actual reserve, there are chances of the oil or gas gushing out or even causing a fire, technically known as a “blowout”. To curtail this occurrence, a blowout preventer needs to be used, followed by use of a perforating gun to create holes in the casing through which oil can flow by means of insertion of small diameter casing pipes. A multi-valve structure known as Christmas Tree is cemented to the top of the casing to enable controlled flow of oil or gas from the reserve. For Limestone reservoir rock, acid needs to be used for percolation while for specially constituted proppants are used for percolation via sandstone layers. Well-logging, Drill-stem testing and rock sample testing is carried out as and when required during the process of drilling top confirm various findings.
