LinkedIn announces new features for its global customers

LinkedIn has added some new features to help businesses target global clients. According to the estimates more than 300 million LinkedIn users reside outside United States and the “language preference” feature can help them to read pages and ads in their native languages. With this new language feature, LinkedIn has included 22 languages which include French, Italian, German, Indonesian, Dutch, Korean,Spanish, Swedish, English (UK and US), Portuguese languages. LinkedIn announced that advertisers will now have the access to publish ads in the native language of their user base. This feature is known as language preference targeting.

The second feature allows companies to specify audience for every feed which simply implies that they can filter which audience can see their ads or feeds. This can be easily understood by a small example- A company which can now share the content to users based in US but can restrict it for French users. These features on LinkedIn can help companies in their global business model.

Earlier, when LinkedIn users visited company pages, they would hit all the feeds and posts regardless of languages. There has been an upsurge (more than 40%) in the number of mobile users of LinkedIn and in some places like Singapore, Malaysia and Costa Rica this figure has jumped up to 50%. LinkedIn has been focusing global business market from quite some time now and building these new features has always been a priority for LinkedIn to reach its global user base.

Translation scammers exposed...!!

Translation industry is infested with scammers who spoil the time, effort and reputation of the translator or the translation agency. They steal the original profile of the translator, sometimes change name and always fake their email id. It is generally see that they come with either a Hotmail id or a Gmail id. To personify the legitimate translator’s profile, they will not change the address but will change their contact number. After making these changes, they put their profile/CVs online, as genuine translators to deliver their services to the incautious clients.  They respond to the “online translation jobs” or market their “translation skills” on the basis of their fake CVs. These scammers falsely claim that they are authorized to market CVs of translators. And moreover, if the legitimate translators sign any unidentified agreement, scammers will never disclose to them that they have in fact met with imitators. When scammers are on with their search for genuine translators, they don’t use their personal information which can be verified somehow. Simply put, their names will be fake, company will be fake, email addresses everything will be fake, sometimes with fantasy names. Suppose, a scammer will claim to be based in France, but he may give a bank’s branch address on his/her CV.

When the scammer receives a job, he may give machine translated work, using any tool like Google translate or send the job to the cheapest available translator and pay him nothing usually or sometimes a small sum! When clients receive invoice, they find an unidentified PayPal address or a bank account which belongs to any unidentified person living at some other place totally unrelated with the legitimate translator.  And the story does not end here, when clients ask for proof from the translator, he gets threats and intentional bad words are exchanged in communication!

Be cautious and check if you are not a victim of such scamming business! Scammers may also post their fake profile under your real name on translation forums such as Proz. We have compiled a list of scammer profiles and CVs we have been receiving on our site. Check it out as they can steal your CV, work and reputation!!!!

TECHNICAL TRANSLATION OF TENDER DOCUMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL BIDS

A tender can be defined as an official document stating the offer of a company to carry out a specific work or supply certain goods or make a purchase of land, assets, shares etc at the fixed price or rate stated in the tender. As part of the bidding process for public as well as private sectors in different countries across the world, a request for tender is sent out to prospective suppliers for the products or services that are required to standardize the process of evaluating the best suited supplier for the purpose of Vendor Registration for the company. This is the primary motive for inviting tenders for bidding in the private sector. In case of public sector companies, the prime reason for following this procedure is to ensure that public money invested in the project is used in the right direction and the best supplier is chosen without any trace of bribery or nepotism.
If you are a supplier wanting to pursue international bids in an attempt to globalize, one important fact that you should know is that about sixty percent of the world does not speak English, and therefore tenders in these non-English speaking geographical zones will have to be submitted in the native language of that particular state or company. Considering that tenders are such important documents, and the fact that a single error in translating your tender can mean loss of lucrative international prospects for you, making an incorrect choice for tender translation services might prove to be catastrophic. On the other hand, an effectively translated technical bid can mean secure high-fetching deals for your company.
With increased globalization, the need for reliable and accurate tender translation services has increased manifold. But not all translation agencies have the necessary expertise to execute these translations effectively. To start with, tenders for international bidding, especially technical bidding are highly technical documents; therefore the concerned translation must have the necessary expertise and skills for comprehending and translating the technical content. A good translator specializing in tender translation is well versed with the different calls for bids, namely Open or Advertised Tenders and Restricted or Invited Tenders. The former is open to all suppliers or contractors who can guarantee provision of goods and services, while the latter remains open only to specified set of vendors. A copy of the request for tender document should also be taken from the client for reference so that the translation can be done more effectively. An appropriate glossary of terminology and preferably a database in the form of a translation memory are of great help in order to carry out translation at faster turnovers, considering the fact that all requests for tenders have fixed deadlines that need to be adhered to strictly. Moreover, the suppliers as well as the translator need to keep in mind that the mandatory formats and official conventions of drafting a tender vary from country to country. Therefore, prior to undertaking a tender translation assignment, the translations service provider must seek complete clarity from the client with regard to the desired format of the translated tender.

IMPORTANCE OF PRESS RELEASE TRANSLATION

A Press Release is an official statement given by an individual or an organization aimed at communicating something newsworthy to the media either by email, video release, newspapers, magazines, radio, television, live press conferences or press release websites. The typical format of a press release statement comprises of a headline, dateline, introduction, body, boiler plate (an “about” section), a closing symbol ( that varies from  country to country) and Media Contact Imformation in the end. For any organization  irrespective of its size, location and industry, press releases are important tools for advertising itself, broadcasting its services as well as announcing its latest updates. With more and more companies striving to reach out to multilingual markets across the globe, the demand for quality press release translations as well as submission services has seen a remarkable growth in the recent years.
If you have spent considerable time, money and effort in developing your company’s press release in the original language, it is imperative that the quality, consistency, style/pattern and clarity of communication be maintained for all its translated versions in order to maintain brand uniformity and for that matter, even the credibility of your organization. Also, a press release is a way to reach out to a large audience, hence one cannot afford to overlook a single error here. The third vital factor that comes into play of course is the time factor; every press release comes with a deadline. This necessitates the requirement for not only accurate translation, but fast and efficient turnovers so that the news doesn’t become old. The translated press release must be as informative and well written as the original version. Keeping the target audience in mind is also necessary; a complete in-sight needs to be gained on the psyche of the end-user as well as social, political and cultural background do the end user, to avoid socially or culturally inappropriate translations. If even one of these criteria remains unfulfilled, the very essence your document is lost. Hence it is important that if you are on the look-out for certified translation services for your press releases, you must opt for a highly reliable Language Service Provider who is well versed with the nitty-gritty’s of Press Release Translation Services.

FINANCIAL TRANSLATION: AN OVERVIEW

Globalization has radically altered the business strategy and financial policies of present-day companies, pitching increasing number of players to compete in international markets. The job of a Financial Translator is extremely challenging, which is why good financial translators are hard to come by. The job involves translation of financial documents such as Annual Reports, Income Statements, Budgets, Forecasts, P & L Statements, Balance Sheets, Tax Statements, Auditor’s Reports, Documents of Insurance, and Bank Statements. There is no scope for even a minute error since most of the key data that is crucial to an organization is encompassed in its Financial Documents.
Since this is a highly specialized skill, only a translator who has a sound knowledge base of financial terms and terminologies, as well as accounting practices of the specific countries that are being dealt with can successfully handle financial translation projects. The key players that have spiralled the demand for professional financial translation services include multinationals, banks, accounting firms, financial service providers, mortgage firms, financial institutions and investor firms. The first and foremost criterion for any organization that has a financial translation requirement is that the confidentiality of its highly sensitive and critical documents be maintained at all times. If the client cannot entrust you with his or her private documents, then it defeats the entire purpose altogether.
The next requirement of course is the accuracy of translation which includes correctly translating the content of the source document into its translated version, keeping in mind the domain-specific terms as well as accounting practices of both countries. For certain types of assignments, apart from knowledge of financial terms, one also needs to know about regulatory requirements for financial transactions, trade agreements etc between the two countries. Another important aspect is the formatting of the documents. It is always recommended that clear guidelines be taken from the client as to how the formatting of the source document should be. Moreover, after the translation process is completed, a qualified proof reader must recheck the document for errors and finally look into the formatting of the document, to ensure that it exactly meets the prescribed standards.
A financial translator might be highly qualified and experienced, but what sets one apart from the rest of the crowd is credibility, trust-worthiness and above all, integrity under all circumstances.

THE WHY’S OF LEARNING A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart”, as quoted by South African Icon, Nelson Mandela offers great in-sight into the reasons why one should learn a foreign language. For those who feel that English is universal Lingua Franca, an eye opener would be the latest census which states that out of 6.92 billion people in the world; approximately 5.5 billion people do not speak English as their first language or even second language. So if you are seeking to explore new avenues across borders (be it professional or personal), English is definitely not an option to bank upon for quite a few areas territories across the globe!
There are umpteen reasons on why one should consider broadening one’s linguistic capabilities, the primary reason as of today being business communication. Considering a small example; to the utter amusement of tourists in China, the English-translated menus of several Chinese restaurants have “Stir fried-wikipedia” and “ Translate Server Error” listed in them. If the restaurant owners had basic knowledge of English, they could have cross checked and prevented these massive errors in their restaurant menus. Again, if your work demands that you travel abroad frequently, it is always wise to linguistically equip yourself to meet all situations. Moreover, in the era of globalization wherein multinationals are seeking to expand internationally and communicate across multilingual platforms to sell their products and services, careers centered on translation, interpretation, transcription, localization etc are becoming extremely lucrative, and although a lot more than mere linguistic experience is required to be successful in these avenues, learning a foreign language is always the best way to start!
If you are a globe-trotter who is passionate about travelling to different countries and appreciating different cultures, languages are the best channels that serve your purpose. Also in case you have certain academic pursuits, the texts of which are available only in a particular language, it is imperative that you are well-versed in the language to pursue your research seamlessly. For example, if you want to undertake research on a particular aspect of the Roman Empire, you must be well-versed with Latin and Greek languages to be able to read the manuscripts and inscriptions available. In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Language is the archives of history.” It is a known fact that in today’s competitive workplace, knowing an additional language definitely gives your resume an extra edge.
To conclude this never-ending list of reasons, it would be apt to cite that there need not always be a reason for whatever you decide to pursue in your life. Sometimes it’s all about doing things purely for passion. If you have a flair for languages, if you are passionate about embracing new thoughts and ideas or if you want to learn a new language just for the sheer joy in it, you are most welcome to foray into the world of languages. In the words of Contemporary Psycholinguist Frank Smith, “One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.”

RUSSIAN TRANSLATION: AN OVERVIEW

Introduction:
Russian is the 5th most spoken language in the world and features in the list of official languages of all major international bodies, namely the United Nations, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the World Health Organization as well as the World Tourism Organization. It is the most widely-spoken of all Slavic Languages, the largest native language in Europe as well as the most geographically widespread language across Eurasia.
Demand for quality Russian Translation:
In the wake of globalization,  Russia’s strategic position as a leading exporter of advanced defence technology as well as it’s precious reserves of Oil and Gas, have created a huge requirement for high quality, reliable and professional Russian to English as well as English to Russian Translation Service Providers across the world. The key players availing these services include foreign investors looking to invest in Russia, multinationals seeking to expand their markets in Russia, Oil and Gas companies undertaking various projects in Russia as well as public sector and private sector organizations importing Russian technology.
Basic know-how of Russian Translation
For effective and reliable Russian Translation Services, it is necessary that the translator must not only possess sound linguistic expertise, but also well grounded understanding of Russian culture, traditions, social norms, work ethics etc and updated knowledge of latest terms and terminologies. It is also necessary that the translator be a native of Russia, for the purpose of enhanced understanding of the native culture, traditions, social norms and other fine aspects about Russia, to be able to churn out context-specific, culturally and socially appropriate translations. One must also take into account whether the translation involves British English or American English, as well as which dialect of Russian, as dialects vary across northern, central and southern Russia. In order to maintain uniformity of the website and avoid confusing end-users, one must stick to the particular style or dialect from the beginning till the end. One can use machine translators like Google Translate, ABB Lingo etc, but curtail their use as secondary sources rather than becoming fully dependent upon them.
Nuances of Russian to English Translation:
The Cyrillic script is used for writing Russian that dates back to the 9th century. Initially, it had 43 letters (24 of them derived from the Greek alphabet) which is reduced to 33 letters at present. An estimated ten percent of Russian words bear resemblance to English words such as “problem”, “coffee”, “café” etc, while a smaller percentage of words have also been taken from Italian, French and German. An important guideline is not to translate people’s names, names of food etc and let them remain as they are. While undertaking Russian to English translation services or vice versa, one will encounter a number of “false friends”, that is words that look or sound similar in both languages but have very different meanings. For example, “magazin” in Russian means “shop”, while “cabinet” means “office”. (Source: bbc.co.uk)

Conclusion:
To conclude, effective Russian to English translation as well as English to Russian translation is a multi-faceted procedure that requires in-depth understanding before actually undertaking the project. The translator must understand not only the nuances of both languages, but also delve deep into the psyche as well as the political, social, cultural and economic background of the end-users of the website to carry out effective translation.

SIGNIFICANCE OF PACKAGING TRANSLATION IN THE AGE OF GLOBALIZATION

Technically, the term “packaging” covers all aspects related to designing, evaluating and producing packages for transport, distribution, warehousing, logistics and sale of products, and Package Labeling refers to identification text, product name, advertising, instructions, cautionary text, warnings etc printed on the package, label, container or the product itself. In the context of marketing, the packaging of a product is one of the key determinants that influence a potential consumer’s decision to go ahead with the purchase. As the classic saying goes, “You can judge a book by its cover”, effective packaging or more precisely effective package labeling, by means of visual appeal, functionality and promotional information, makes you stand apart from your competitors.
With more and more companies striving to reach out to multilingual customers across the globe and expand their horizons beyond borders, the need for effective packaging translation has proliferated like never before. Reliable packaging translation services are important not only for the purpose of marketing but also to clearly and accurately communicate important information such as usage guidelines, dosage, cautionary text, warnings etc, the mistranslated versions of which could lead to catastrophic financial and legal implications. The following points illustrate why packaging translation is so significant in the era of globalization:
